NYFT Volunteer Profiles: Bernie Tarver

By Bernie Tarver

If there is one lesson we all learned from last year's presidential election, it's that ordinary people can make a big difference when they get organized and active.

I'm an average New Yorker and I'm supporting Bill Thompson for Mayor by volunteering, because I believe he is more in touch with the issues that are important to people like us.

I live in Harlem. For the past eight years I've watched our community transformed by luxury high-rise apartment buildings built by wealthy real estate developers, while lifelong Harlem residents struggle to find affordable housing. All over this city, we've seen mom and pop businesses close their doors, while big corporations get tax credits and sweetheart deals. And in one of the most diverse cities in America, we've seen the current mayor flip-flop on issues important to gays and lesbians, homeless families and unionized workers. I'm confident Bill Thompson already has better positions on these key issues and won't waffle just to get a vote.

Michael Bloomberg likes to talk about how he's "independent" of special interests. What he really means is, he only listens to Michael Bloomberg. A candidate who doesn't need your help to get elected is a politician who won't seek your input on any of the issues important to you when he's in office. Just look at the last eight years. I believe Bill Thompson knows that public servants are here to serve the public and will listen to people like me.
