News » Manhattan Electeds Endorse Thompson For Mayor

Posted on October 10, 2009

Today, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, Senator Liz Krueger, Assembly member Micah Kellner, Assemblyman Jonathan Bing, Councilmember Dan Garodnick and Councilmember Jessica Lappin endorsed Bill Thompson for Mayor.

Standing with business owners and residents on Second Avenue on the Upper East Side, Thompson discussed their plight and how best government can help ease their suffering during the construction.

Thompson said "The needs of small businesses and working New Yorkers in communities like this have been ignored far too long in favor of big business, special interests and Wall Street. It's time to recommit our city government's priorities and resources to better represent the people who are the driving force behind NY's economic engine: small business owners and hard working New Yorkers. The Second Avenue subway project is just another example of misplaced priorities and mismanagement that has caused harm to mom and pop businesses throughout the East Side and in communities throughout the five boroughs. When I am mayor; I will ensure that large infrastructure and construction projects like this one do not come at the expense of our neighborhoods."

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said "Bill must be getting used to presidential endorsements these days. I am here as another President endorsing Bill Thompson for Mayor of New York. Today is the time for all Democrats to rally in support of our nominee for Mayor. I have worked closely with Bill on a host of issues - from education reform to affordable housing, and the quality of life for our neighborhoods. I can say without hesitation that Bill Thompson is ready to lead this city and will work tirelessly to preserve our core progressive values."

While we have been trying to provide a lifeline to Second Avenue businesses, all Mike Bloomberg has done is provide lip-service. We need a Mayor who understands that small businesses are the bedrock of this City. That man is Bill Thompson," said Assembly Member Micah Z. Kellner.

"I believe in Bill Thompson," said East Side Assemblyman Member Jonathan Bing (D-Manhattan). "Whether it's fighting for tenants living in affordable housing, protecting the interests of neighborhood residents with regard to our parks and open space, or improving our public education system, I have seen the impact that Bill Thompson has made in my community. I am glad that Bill is our Democratic candidate for Mayor and I am proud to support him."
