To save N.Y.C. public transit, make car owners pony up
By Bill Thompson At a time when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is proposing a 23% fare hike and subway, bus and commuter line service cuts that would worsen crowding and service on most lines, we desperately need a new approach to addressing the MTA's budget shortfall. Namely: Instead of asking subway and bus riders to dig deeper into emptier pockets for less service, we should include car owners in the solution.
