Lately more and more voices have been speaking out for change in New York City. Wednesday the voices calling for a break from the status quo grew louder when several prominent Manhattan elected officals endorsed Bill Thompson for mayor including Eric Schneiderman, Daniel O’Donnell, Deborah J. Glick, Micah Kellner -- all of whom stand together against Mayor Bloomberg's proposed cuts to essential HIV/AIDS care for suffereing New Yorkers.
From the press release:
THOMPSON RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT FROM MANHATTAN ELECTEDS FOR NEW YORK CITY MAYOR
Discuss Thompson’s Commitment to Supportive Housing and Community Based Programs that Provide Essential Services
Manhattan elected officials including State Senator Eric Schneiderman, Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell, Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick and Assemblymember Micah Kellner endorsed Bill Thompson for mayor at a press conference regarding the potential crisis that threatens the role of community based groups in providing critical services including HIV/AIDS care, treatment and prevention, and supportive housing.
Thompson strongly disagrees with the Mayor’s proposed cuts including the elimination of the HASA Scattered Site II Program, the reduction in HIV /AIDS case management staff at supportive housing programs, cuts in nutrition programs and the exclusion of community based programs in a Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s RFP to create a care coordination program for PLWAs. These proposed budget cuts are indicative of a disconnect between the Mayor and New Yorkers who are struggling. By cutting vital medical, mental health and many other essential services Mayor Bloomberg is once again targeting a community that simply cannot afford any more cuts.
Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick "We must not leave our most vulnerable citizens behind as we work to move our city forward. Bill Thompson recognizes this and is once again speaking up for the needs of struggling New Yorkers. He understands that ensuring all New Yorkers have access to healthcare, housing and other core supports is essential to our recovery."
Assemblymember Micah Kellner added "In these tough times Bill Thompson knows that now more than ever New Yorkers need quality health care, affordable housing and access to essential services that improve their quality of life. I support Bill Thompson because he can deliver what New York needs."
...Assemblymember Daniel O’Donnell said "Having known and worked with Bill Thompson for many years, I am fully confident that he will be a mayor for all the people of the City of New York. I am proud to endorse him for mayor and look forward to working together to improve the lives of all New Yorkers"
State Senator Eric Schneiderman added "I am proud to announcement my support for Bill Thompson for mayor. Bill has a proven track record and an understanding of the issues that affect all five boroughs and I am confident that he is the best person to lead New York through these challenging times."
...Bill Thompson has also been endorsed by Assembly member Peter Rivera, Broadway Democrats and members of the Greek community including Tasso Manessis, President of the Pan Gregorian Fund, Dean Angelakos, Dr. Steve Gounardes, former President of the NY Dental Association, Dino Ralis of the Broadway Merchants Association, Helen and John Psaras of the Brooklyn Homeowners Association, Stella Kokolis President of the Federation of Greek American Teachers, Nicholas Chahales, Gus Prentzas, New York State Committeman 36 AD Queens, George Patsalos, President of Aegean Travel Group.
